I have been trying some improvisational piecing. I started sewing strips together and then making a "module" out of them. Then I moved onto working with squares and inserting strips into them and then cutting them up, rotating pieces, and then sewing them back together. It's fun because each module is different. I can't predict how the module will turn out.
I have been putting the work on the design wall and editing out modules. I noted I was experiencing quite a bit of tension about not knowing where the thing was going. As I was trying to get the modules on the design wall to work with each other, I put the things I was editing out of the piece in the corner of the design wall. Guess what after I took a break I realized that the corner edits were the modules I could work with. Below is a picture of what is on the design wall.
My inspiration for doing this work was reading the book Create Your Own Free-Form Quilts by Rayna Gillman. Click here to go to her blog.
